Lot 4048
Alexios Doukas Komnenos Angelos, 1150-1200. Seal (Lead, 31 mm, 22.77 g, 12 h). ЄΓⲰ / KPATVNⲰ / TAC ΓPAΦAC / AΛЄΞIOV ("I authorize the writings of Alexios") in four lines. Rev. Δ૪KⲰN / KOMNHⲰN / AΓΓЄΛⲰNV/MⲰN KΛA/ΔOV ("branch on the tree of the Doukas, Komnenos and Angelos families") in five lines. Sandrovskaja/Seibt 78. Wassiliou-Seibt, Corpus 674. Some surface roughness, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Sandrovskaja/Seibt attribute this seal to a son of the sebastokrator Johannes Doukas, son of Konstantinos Angelos and Theodora, daughter of the emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118). He was reportedly blinded by Andronikos I (1183-1185), but perhaps his punishment was less severe in reality, as during the reign of his kinsman Isaac Angelos, he was appointed as fleet commander against Isaac Komnenos, who had established himself as a usurper in Cyprus. The assault failed and Alexios was captured for a short time. One other seal type (known from examples in Dumbarton Oaks and formerly in the Zacos collection) may also be attributed to this Alexios (Wassiliou-Seibt, Corpus 1902)
